financial and estate planning

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What process do you follow in providing financial planning advice?

We believe strongly in the financial planning process as developed by the College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado. Clients are advised to have the firm prepare a written financial plan which provides the basis for most decisions.

2. What does the financial plan cover?

Every plan explores the six basic areas of a person's financial circumstances. These are: financial position; protection planning; investment planning; tax planning; retirement planning; as well as wealth transfer and estate planning.

3. Does the firm sell investment products? If not, how is it compensated?

We charge a fee for all our services, whether planning, advisory or legal. While some clients wish to proceed on the basis of an hourly rate, some prefer to have a fixed fee for planning services established at the beginning of the relationship. Once we understand the extent and complexity of the clients situation, we usually will be able to quote a fixed fee.

4. Isn't it better to simply have a financial planner get a commission on products I buy?

The more appropriate question is "better for whom?" If the so-called advisor is offering services "for free" he or she won't receive any compensation unless you buy something. If you find yourself in such an arrangement, you will almost certainly be the recipient of "advice" to buy a host of products or services which the planner has available. These products may -- or may not -- improve your financial circumstances, but they are certain to improve the financial circumstances of the person selling them.

5. If I want to get started, what's the first step?

On the financial planning side, our firm has designed a simple document which we call the Confidential Client Questionnaire. It seeks basic information about your finances and family situation. Once we have reviewed your completed questionnaire, we can then offer some observations about how we can be of service, and what our fee will be. Simply click on the contact link on this site and request the form from us.

On the legal side, collect all your thoughts and questions, then put a call in to the office on the toll-free line 877-362-7526. Mr. Doherty will be happy to discuss your circumstances. This initial call is without cost or obligation to you.

6. What does is cost to have you review my completed Confidential Questionnaire?

Our policy is to offer an initial consultation on a complimentary basis to individuals or businesses considering hiring a financial professional. Our review of your completed questionnaire is part of the initial consultation.
